I cannot believe how much I accomplished today. I did all of Angela’s Back Links from the April packet and I am now considering ordering her older packets too. I am going to be watching my traffic the next few days to see how much the links have helped my sites improve. Several users on The Niche Blogger forum have reported seeing more traffic and better ranking just days after getting Angela’s packets.
My morning was broken up with a call from the school nurse reporting that my son’s contact lens was bothering him and that I needed to come to his aid right away (he’s 7 years old). It was such a relief to be stress-free from having to ask a boss for time to get away to take care of such an emergency. It just made me feel even more appreciative about being my OWN boss and blogging my way to independence. How many people can just break away from their work day to care for their child?! This is not something I just want to do passively, this is my future… a future for my son and I.
Side note: I took my son grocery shopping yesterday and out of the blue he asked me “Mom, wouldn’t it be nice to just have enough money to buy us whatever you wanted?” I never talk about finances with him but he far too often hears me say “No hun, mommy doesn’t have enough money for that”. During one walk down the snack aisle he noticed a box of fruit snacks and said “Whoa that is $7.00. That’s a lot of money. I don’t want to spend a lot of your money mom”.
I don’t know how to feel about this. Should I be proud that he is understanding the value of a dollar or should I feel sad that he knows money is tight?
Anyhow, so after running down to his school, I came back and finished more back links then i had to run and get him at noon since it was early release day.
Then I finished my last 2 back link efforts and then I managed to bust out 5 posts for a new niche blog I started last week. THEN…oh yes there is more. I decided to try my hand at putting together an excel spreadsheet so I can start tracking my business expenses and earnings. It was so much easier than I thought. I figured it out and configured the main expense colum to tally up everything. It’s beautiful.

Sarah, you should be proud of the hard work and sacrifice you are devoting to your son. Your story touches the heart.
Your son;s understanding of how money does not ‘grow on trees’ will benefit him long into adulthood. It is a BIG positive. You are leading by example. This he will not forget.
At my ripe old age, If someone were to ask me how to raise a child, I would say, “give them a roof, 3 meals a a day and all the love you can”….
….but then GIVE THEM NOTHING ELSE.
I’m serious. NOTHING. That is really all they need.
As young adults they will become self-reliant and motivated, and courageous. You will have grown a little warrior, so to speak, who can totally stand on his own two feet and handle whatever comes his way in life.

Remember, you are raising a great little leader.

Sarah – What a sweet story! I think you should talk openly with your son about money.
Some kids have no concept of money or money management and grow up to be adults with HUGE amounts of debt. I happen to be one of those adults! I’m working on it though and I’m involving my 4 kids, not in the details but in saving money and cutting back so I can pay off debt. We celebrate every time I pay a vehicle off – I’ve paid off two vehicle loans in the last 12 months and paid them each off more than one year ahead of schedule!
Back in Dec 08, money was so tight for us because my husband who works for himself, hadn’t been paid in 3 months! I ended up having to ask my 11 year old daughter for a $1,000 loan! Talk about an embarrassing eye opener! Things are much better now financially for us, better than they have been in at least 10 years!
Be open with your son about money. Teach him to save and the difference between “wants” and “needs”.
The lessons you are teaching your son now, even with the realization of the cost of a box of snacks, is a valuable lesson he will carry for life. Yes, we all wish we had enough money to buy whatever we want, but, when we’ve bought that, isn’t there always more? It’s more important to appreciate what you have, especially if it is all you need.
@Bruce – Thanks so much for encouragement. I do want my son to become self-reliant and motivated as he grows. Although he has great fears about driving a car when he gets older. Just the other day he mentioned how I will drive him to his work when he gets a job. lol He says he is scared to drive because he doesn’t know how. Funny how a 7 yr old can worry about that when he still has another 10 years or so to go until he can even learn to drive.
@Shelly – Excellant advice on teaching him the difference between wants and needs. Any suggestions on the age recommended to start giving him an allowance? He has scrimped and saved his tooth fairy money so far and he never talks about what he plans to do with it. It just collects. lol
@Russ – I do agree it is important to appreciate what you have. Although often I do feel as though I can’t do all the cool things his dad can do with him because his dad can afford to splurge a bit more on him. You know he takes him to amusement parks, museums, kid arcades and since I am just making ends meet, I can’t do those sorts of things. My son never makes me feel like an inadequate mom or anything but it would be nice to have the extra money to do those sorts of things with him too.

Money management is something kids need to be taught before they reach ripe age. You know-you can easily mold soft clay into any shape you like but you cannot do the same once it is hardened into a brick. When people reach the ripe age, it becomes difficult (if not impossible) to change their habits and then they face tremendous financial problems down the road.
So it is a good thing you are doing by teaching the money basics to your son. Not many parents are prudent enough to take that step, and no wonder those very parents regret later on.
Wow you are being a good parent by teaching your son about money basics. No matter how much you earn per month, if you don’t know how to manage it well, it would vanish from your wallet even before you had a chance to count the cash!
