This entry is more like an update of the craziness I am still dealing with as I prepare to move. Yesterday was my 34th birthday. Eek! It was a busy day too. I was suppose to head to downtown to take care of some paperwork in order to prepare to move, suppose to meet my ex’s mother for lunch, pick up my son from school, go to the chiropractor to follow-up on my lower back pain and then have a birthday dinner with my family.
I had to wake up at the crack of dawn to get my son to school about 15 minutes earlier in order to increase the hope that I could actually be seen by the self-service clinic that helps with family law. I had to get paperwork filed requesting for permission from the court to move my son out of the area since my ex-husband strongly objects and has started sending me emails threatening that he will take legal action to prevent me from moving. I am not fearful. I don’t mean to get all preachy on you guys but I am a Christian and I feel that just as God is helping my business flourish, He is also leading me into new waters by changing my “sails”. I have peace of letting the home go (it looks like we will end up short selling the home). For those of you that have read the story of Job, let me just say that I feel like Job. Even though I was never rich nor powerful, like Job; I feel I have lost everything. I had lost my marriage, my hope of having more children closer in age to my son and now my house. Although I still have my son (thank the Lord) and my health (thank you again Lord) I still feel as though all is gone. Gone…but not lost. I know my days ahead will be brighter and that one day God will restore all that was lost. I believe God will bless me with the most amazing husband/father beyond my wildest dreams and that one day I will be most successful with my online business and get my dream home. A home 3x the size of the one I am losing and in a city far more beautiful than San Jose.
Yesterday, I had to break the news to my son’s grandmother (my ex’s mother) about us moving. Naturally she cried. He is her only grandchild in California. The others live in Minnesota. Of course her first suggestion was “Well why don’t you just work as a dental assistant so you can afford an apartment here”.
I looked at her and refrained from scoffing. I took a deep breath and explained; “If I work as a dental assistant, I cannot work on my online business and if I do not work on my online business, it will never grow. Some day my business is going to earn me twice or three times the amount I ever would have made in the dental field. I am already earning a passive income from it and some day I will only need to do 2-3 hours of maintenance work on it instead of my 8-10 hours now.”
No one gets this. You get this and I get this, BUT people that are not in the IM world have no clue. They still think that internet marketing is a hobby or a scam or they just don’t believe that you can earn a real honest living from it.
Even the latest email I received my from my ex also mentions this notion: “Why don’t you get a REAL job”?
I can’t help but laugh because the day is coming when I will just wake up with my cup of coffee, log onto my computer to check out my earnings for the day and see that I have already earned more money while I slept than he has while he has already been working for 3 hours that day.
Even when I look at my earnings yesterday it really makes me appreciate my passive income. How many people can say they earned $35.89 while standing in line at the superior court office or while getting treatment in the chiropractor’s office. I have not touched any of my sites in several days and yet they continue to earn. Internet marketing is the ideal online business!
I know for many of you, you cannot just quit your job and work full-time. And for some of you, I know your husbands or wives are extremely skeptical and they are at their wits end of seeing you spend hundreds of dollars on IM materials and monthly fees each month. Just remind yourself, you are doing this for your family. You will have to make sacrifices now but your day will come where you can tell your boss to suck it and quit your job with the satisfaction of knowing you did it! You made it and now you even freed up your time to spend with your family. Life is so short and your kids grow up so fast but you have the power to invest in your health and happiness.
Do whatever it takes to make your business a priority. Do not be discouraged by the people that say it doesn’t work or lead you to believe its not a real job. It is a real job and its your ticket to a better quality of life.

Awesome advice and sorry to hear about all the troubles you are going through. If anyone can turn this around for you, we all know God can. I was divorced at 35 with 2 kids, but now I’m 39 with 3 kids and another on the way so your life is not over by any means. Keep your head up and follow your dreams.

It’s true, your blog is your business and it needs attention just any other business. People get caught up in thinking that work is getting up everyday and driving to a destination. The smarter people own businesses so they can stay home.
Hi there,
See it’s posts like this that are really inspiring and help me to make sure that I do everything in my power each day to make my IM career a reality!!
I found your blog through Mike Iser’s blog and have been following along on your journey as I build my passive income up (I should keep track of my progress as you and others do but I only have so much time – ugh!). Your journey has been awesome and I’ve learned a lot through your experiences too.
Like you and others that your blog attracts (we are a special breed) I’ve been steadily building up my blogs and passive income. I’ve gotten really distracted SEVERAL times but in the last month or so I’ve really been focused and I’ve seen results because of it (went from 1-2 dollar days to 7-10 dollar days).
I am married and have 2 little ones too and I work full time outside of the home. I bring in more than my husband right now and so in order to go full time (which has been my goal for the past 1.5 years) I have to bring in 5K. It seems impossible BUT I know that I can do it. I have too!
It is reallllly hard working full time and coming home and trying to find the time to get the blogs up, content out, and backlinks going.
But it is something that I MUST accomplish and can’t give up on. Passive income and internet marketing IS so awesome AND SO rewarding. It’s like we are struggling and fighting for something big and we can’t give up no matter what those who don’t understand say (like get a REAL job – that’s crazy! that’s like saying get in prison – no way – just over broke is NOT the ideal life).
Internet marketing is more than a real job – it’s work that pays off big time in the end. It will allow you to spend your time (something you can’t get back) with your family, allow you to take vacations when you say, allow you the freedom to make your own decisions about life instead of having a boss or a job determine what you will do, where you will go, and how much you’ll make.
Thanks for this post. I will remember to make sure my IM business is my priority and will make my goals a reality! And I know you will too!
Amen to that!
You have a great attitude, Sara. I hope everything gets worked out quickly so you can move on mentally. I find it difficult to focus when I have crap hanging over my head.
.-= Carrie´s last blog ..Google Rankings Stuck =-.
I can so relate to this. My family thinks I am wasting my time and I have given up trying to explain it to them.
I have found an online friend doing the same kind of biz and we are now calling each other once a week just to bounce things off each other. I really look forward to these weekly chats as it is so nice to talk to someone who “gets it.”

Happy 34th! I have been 29 for the 5th year in a row now! It will soon be 6 years!
When things get tough I just think about the future and where I envision myself in 1 year, 2 years, and etc. That always helps me to get through any problems I am facing right now! My Husband does not understand what I am doing that much.
He does not believe that people will click on ads. I had to show him some ads on fishing sites to help him understand-he did say after I showed him (with fishing) that he would click on them! He still wants to see proof and since I am still very new it will take a little while.
@Mike – That’s true and I’m happy to hear that life does get better with time. Congrats with the baby on the way? Know what sex it is?
@Fabian – So true! People totally overlook home businesses as being real businesses.
@Lisa – That’s awesome you have gone from $1-2/day to $7-10. I can’t imagine how busy you must be working full-time and pursuing your online business but before you know it, you’ll be able to quit your job and work from home. Keep living your dream Lisa because it will carry you through rough patches and you will be successful. You already are!
@Carrie – It is very difficult for me to concentrate on doing anything else right now. I am so focused on getting all my paperwork done for a speedy court date, packing up, tossing out junk and getting stuff ready for another garage sale this weekend that I cannot even concentrate to do any article writing. Since I won’t be running around tomorrow, I think I will try and at least get some BB posts queued up. But I seriously just want this craziness over with so I can breathe again and focus back on my business.
@Cathy – That’s awesome that you have another IM buddy to talk with and keep each other up-to-speed. I chat with a few people via chat but its not the same.
@Kelly – Yup, just gotta keep your eye on the prize. As cliche as that sounds its true especially in this business.
It’s a girl so that makes 3 girls and 1 boy. It’s a lot of work but they are so much fun, at least when they are little.
.-= Mike Roosa´s last blog ..Making The First Dollar =-.
Right – it is fun when they’re little.
I’m 34 going on 35 this year…er…what was that, Kelly? 29 going on a 6th year? Yeah…lol
Anyway, I have an 18 y.o. who’s married, 16 y.o. in driver’s training, 12 y.o. domestic diva, 10 y.o. saving-my-money-to-go-hunting-with-daddy-who-has-never-shot-anything-but-a-deadline son, 6 y.o. mini-me with a bigger heart than his body, 4 y.o. little red-headed diva, 2 y.o. queen of the castle, and then there’s my baby-boy, the 3rd of the boys…
I can vouch that they are so fun when little…and they get better w/age. It’s a once in a lifetime chance to change the future: our kids will be here for the long-haul.
Crumbs! sorry I’m getting all preachy on you, just wanted to say that kids get better w/time, too often we think it’s the opposite.

When do you have time to work?
.-= Mike Roosa´s last blog ..Making The First Dollar =-.
This is a super-nested comment – love it! Um, as for when do I have time to work…let’s see: when I should be sleeping.
I work until about 2-4 a.m. Get up at 5-6…well, 6:30-7am lately…
Until I crash. Not recommending it. Gingko Biloboa + Vitamins A,B,C,D and E, plus plenty of green tea, some echinachea (sp?), Fish Oil tabs…it’s all held together by sheer grace of God, and I’ll sleep in on Saturday until 8:30 am.
I’ve a goal to make 2010 the last brick-n-mortar year…taking the huge chip on my shoulder and uber-tight budget and actually building a passive income for ultimate freedom, since family time is the most important thing to me (ironically).
.-= JamestheJust on Elance´s last blog ..Magic Submitter Release Date is Today 5-25-2010 So Guess Who Owns It Now? =-.
My wife thinks I am mad. I have made it to £20 per day now, I guess that is about $30. But she just looks at it as – “is that all?” and doesnt realise the potential that in 6 months it should be $100 per day, 12 months $200 per day at least. It is a very mentally tiring business, sometimes I am plagued by self doubt, but the progress speaks for itself. Can’t wait until I hit £50 per day, as that will be a pretty good income – I plan on moving to bangkok too, so £50 per day will be more than enough to live a really good life. Thats the dream that is keeping me motivated, only another £30 per day to go lol.
Many said I had lost my marbles leaving a high 5 figure a year job and with army of workers at my disposal. Maybe you call that mid career/life crisis. What Websidual is true about the general notion about business or a job. They think that setting up a business must have physical representation, like an office or a shop front etc. I could have used my reserve to buy a franchise, setting up an office, going to office as usual , then my tenure for risk will be much lower. But If I set up an IM business, I could still go on for a year or so without making money. But the ultimate purpose is I want to spend more time with my family and IM provides a pretty good match.
And oh ya….Happy Belated Birthday Sara

Article backlinking’s my specialty! Dude, we should talk. I’m making a free report (no, not building a list, more like testing an idea) — would definitely like your two cents on it.
If you go to My Article Network and opt in for the free training, Matt Callen’s got some really good vid’s he emails you (3 total, about 25 mins ea.) — and as a freelancer/IMer, I have to say it was extremely informative in places (though I already use it effectively).
Anyhow, will have to second your thoughts and everyone’s re: how crazy we appear….until that bank acct fills up while we’re sleeping.

Backlinking is my fav subject as well. I had done a few testing for the last couple of months and embarking now into a new test soon. Well if you find my 2 cents worthwhile, you know where to find me.

Great post!. Fortunately, my family generally supports my endeavors, even if they do not understand what I am doing fully – but I do find it hard to explain to other people what I am doing and why I haven’t got a full time job to support me and my son. So it’s great to come to places like your blog and read your posts and the comments of many others who “get it” and have similar dreams and goals.

My mom finally gets it and I only recently discovered this when I spoke with her last week about having to let go of the house. I was both shocked that the words actually came out of her own mouth and at her own accord of “you can continue to work on your business and once it earns you enough then you can decide where to live”. She was excited for me when i had reported my first $50 day and I could tell by her reaction that she was truly excited for me and not just pretending. She believes in me now.
now i am officially stalking….sorry….but when you mentioned your mom, I had a flashback to mine (she still lives in Northern Cali), she keeps wondering when I’ll “quit working so hard.”
because, mom, that’s what I did the *first 34 years of my life* lol
Then I talk to her about how easy this is (thinking of ShoeMoney’s grandmother story and the eBay arbitrage)…hoping she’ll retire to come live up here w/us and the kids…then she asks, “But what’s WRONG with getting a REAL job?”
Because, mom — I don’t want to be 75 y/o and still *have to work* like dad did…
love my mom. she thinks I’m crazy still. you’re a step ahead…
I guess it just has to do with the internet. Like the internet is somehow only meant for those OTHER guys to make money off of.
Even if she hasn’t come around yet, there is still hope yet. Maybe it will take you taking her on some exotic vacation that you could never afford before once you are earning more than you imagined. haha! I would love to do that for my parents. Take them to Spain or Italy for like 2 weeks! That would be quite an accomplishment. Ooo something else to add to the vision board!
THANKS for thinking I had a vision board. lol
Mom’s from the Philippines – she was born in a very exotic place, I grew up there — and she drives a Lexus, owns a 1/2 million dollar house, is dating an airline something or other….
That woman’s a rags-to-riches story. BUT I like your ideas, they’re all good.
How much, btw, is the BB subscription? AND: How’s the backink Philippines going? I know it’s early yet…
I keep hearing about BB and the fact that the submissions are fast – are you still seeing those results?
(sorry, switched gears and still stalking…I”m getting OFF your blog and BACK to this gig. Can you block access to this blog from my IP just for the next week? Please?)
LOL Block you? But you’re so entertaining!!
My BB subscription was $67 but I hear its cheaper if you can get access through his list. That URL wasn’t meant to go public but I have heard of several people subscribing that way. It’s still worth $67 a month. I’ve gotten very good results with it.
My results so far with Backlinks Philippines is off the hook! Its only been a few days and the site has moved several positions and its receiving clicks everyday. I will do a 1 week update in a few more days. But I am very impressed!
I just wanted to second everyone Re: the sentiment. My wife gets pretty tired of hearing about CPC, keywords, and my 101 ideas on making money online. I can’t keep up with my brain sometimes…
In any event, Sara: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I’ll def. be praying for you – and interestingly, you and I both relate to Job. That character (more than Joseph of Genesis) describes my life to a T, though my wife and I are still married (poor girl’s STUCK with all my kids, plan worked PERFECTLY).
I wanted to tell you I 100% believe in your decision: you’re NOT nuts, you have the best ideas and posts, and you’re going to make it through this season. Remember Ecclesiastes – there is a season for everything, the good news is that it ain’t over. AND: sorry this is happening…very sorry.
It’s actually what brought *me* to Christ in 1998. More on that in an email, and sorry I did get all preachy on your blog (that’s what happens when you have a former ministry candidate discovering one of his blog heroes is a fellow Christian, how rare is that?).

I did not sleep well last night and I was up until 2:00am and woke up at 6:00am. I’m meeting with a lawyer today and hopefully I can rest a little easier today after our meeting. So many questions and concerns and things are getting uglier.
I am going to have to prove to the courts that my business is not a hobby. It is my job! My ex is going to try and say that my business is not successful and that its not a real job. That is 100% not true. This is my REAL job. Shoot, just look at my adsense from January of this year, its obvious my income increases every month. Oh well. Just keep me in your prayers.
I have been stress eating and since my back was hurting no gym in 2 weeks.
Print out your AW Stats, your GA stats…whatever it is you use to track your progress to show the momentum of your business. What a sick joke!!!!
Now I’m angry. That is a potato-sack move…ugh!!

Happy Birthday! It sounds like you are going through a lot right now but you have such a wonderful attitude about it. Even though our situations are quite different, your post definitely gave me more motivation to work just a little harder on my online business. I have two little ones at home under the age of 3 and my husband works a lot so it’s mostly me caring for the little ones. This is why passive income online works for me. If I don’t have the time one day or the energy to work until 1am, I don’t and yet I still seem to make money.. How many people can say that about their “real job”
Just wanted to let you know that you and your son will be my prayers as well. It’s wonderful to see a fellow Christian trusting in the Lord.

Isn’t passive income fantastic?! If your kids are sick, you still get paid. If you are sick, you still get paid. Shoot, if you just don’t feel as though your head is focused to do the work for the day so you decide to not do any work for the day, you still get paid.
I wish you much success with your business.
Hi Sara,
Happy BIrthday. I know it is a hard time now but it is hard to get much done at a good clip when you are working a job. At least that is my experience. Backlinks take a while to mature and I think you will see a nice bump in a few months. I am also curious about your results for the backlink service you are reviewing. You had written a few days ago about John xfactor relying on article directories primarily. Do you think there is an advantage to that or that it makes more sense to use backlinks via profiles/forums etc (or maybe a combo platter)?
I also love the feeling of going to a dr appt or doing things and then coming home and seeing income.
I am still not sure which is best regarding article marketing or forum profiles. I mean I can honestly say that I am seeing tremendous movement from the site Backlinks Philippines is working on. I haven’t seen movement like this in such a short amount of time…like ever!
Dan believes that forum profile backlinks are pretty solid. I haven’t done some isolated tests for them so i cannot support an argument one way or another. I only know that my sandboxed niche blog that finally moved from page 4 to #5 about 2 months ago after using terry’s packets has been solid at #5 ever since.
They do work, no doubt about it. But so does article marketing, and many other forms of link building. As i said before, its not a magic pill. Its time consuming and expensive to outsource. If you are willing to put in the hours, like most things, it will produce results. But at the end of the day, its just another form of link building – a form which i happen to prefer. If you dont like writing loads of articles, then its worth a pop.
I just like firing up my playlist, and getting into the “zone” all day, and firing out a couple of hundred profiles.
hey Dan what do you use for indexing your profiles?
Well, at the moment, I just ping each profile *After* I have placed the links in it. I usually create the profiles first, then come back about 5 days later and add my links. After I have added a bunch, I then post them all to a handful of web 2.0 blogs like wordpress and blogger, then ping those. Seems to work pretty well. Looking into automated tools and boosters at the moment, but im wary of getting bogged down with too many tools and spending lots of money.
Once I am comfortable with how its working, I will start to invest in some automated tools. Doing it this way usually gets about 70% indexed… sometimes more, sometimes less.
Take your Web2.0 properties/profiles w/links, grab all RSS feeds, blast through Magic Submitter or RSSBot…RSSBot’s like, what, $14-15?

Hey Sara,
Happy Birthday! Wow, it seems like only yesterday when I started reading your blog, but I’ve been following your posts consistently over a period of time now, no matter where I go. Even while on vacation I read up on your actions, so if you recently saw visitors from all over Germany, that’s me keeping up.
Sara, I want you to know that for me at least, you have been a constant source of inspiration and a reassuring presence in my own pursuit of IM success. Thank you for sharing all your adventures, ranging from your niche blogging to your hubbing adventures to your vision board and even to your speed dating experiment. In our all-out pursuit of the pot of gold at the end of the internet rainbow, it is often easy to forget that behind each IM practitioner lies a human being. Underneath all that talk of backlinks, keywords, domains, seo, adsense, niche, press releases, wordpress themes, xfactor this and that, is a human soul who runs into so many obstacles and hardships in life that it’s a miracle they still line up those BB queues day in and day out. You give this whole craziness a human face, and for that I can’t thank you enough.
While I am gutted to hear about your current challenge in life, I am also at once proud and inspired that you have charted a course and are sticking to it. And just like the time when you broke out of your $5-$7 adsense rut and wrote about your current elevated earnings, I am looking forward to the time when I will be reading a post from you that talks about all your current challenges in the past tense.
To a better tomorrow,
Stacey
Stacey,
Thank you for your kind post. It really made me feel like all of this is worth it. I am more than happy to pass on good energy, tips and evidence that IM works. Thank you for taking the time to read my blog even while on vacation. I feel so good right now about that.
happy belated birthday there Sara!
Thanks!
Wow Sara what an inspiring post. I know things aren’t easy for you at all right now, but your resolve to get through is showing strong. It’s great that your mum has finally understood – and one day you’ll have the evidence that the sceptics need to see it was all worth it. You already have the proof you need, though, to show that this is a real business. After all, it’s growing like you said and many “traditional” businesses don’t see that kind of profit or growth in the early stages. I’m so glad you’re still sharing here and letting us know about how you’re pushing through and I admire your faith – I also share it with you and know you’re going to achieve all those things you listed.

That’s true Ruth. Don’t they say the most businesses don’t usually start making profit until their second year in? I’ve been doing this for 17 months or so now and I am making money now and no more red lines.
Well, i just got back from meeting with a lawyer and he has put my mind at ease. Last night my ex had threatened to fight for full custody so I really started to freak out but my lawyer assured me that I am the custodial parent and that I will be granted the move.
He also told me that my ex cannot force me to sell the house and in fact it is illegal for him to try and get me to sell it.
So it looks like I can keep my house again! I’m still moving and planning on renting out the house and then I will pay the difference between the rent and mortgage still owed. I’ll actually be able to pay into the loan and not just interest. Apparently rent for 3-4 bedrooms around here is exactly the price that my interest only payment is. Crazy huh?!
So, I still have to proceed with a court date and the lawyer did say this could take some time but its possible I can be granted to move sooner since I need to get renters in here ASAP and I want my son to be able to have some adjusting over the summer before the new school year starts.
That is great Sara-now maybe you will be able to sleep tonight!

That’s good news, Sara! Have you looked into refinancing? Rates are really low right now and depending on your current mortgage you could end up better off refinancing and rolling in closing costs. Sounds too good to be true, but it’s possible.
.-= Carrie´s last blog ..Google Rankings Stuck =-.
My ex had looked into refinancing about a year ago and they even said that he doesn’t qualify for the loan. I will wait until June 1st when Obama’s mortgage relief kicks in and then contact my lender again about lowering my rates.
I know June is only a few days but if this Obama program doesn’t work out, ask about others. The one I got on has been around since last summer. I started it in February.

Hi Sara,
Have you used SEnuke. I have been reading a bit up on it and it getting a lot of good feedback, just wondering if you or anyone else has tryed it, think it comes with a week trial,
I’ve heard great things about SENuke myself, but at $47/month ($100 less?) you can get Magic Submitter: scalable (you can update w/more article directories, Web 2.0 sites, RSS feed aggregators and video submission sites)…
I dunno. I think SENuke’s way too pricey, though I hear it works if you’re into authority sites/major builds or competitive niches.
I just wrote up a review, 2-parter, of Magic Submitter on my blog (so that’s why I’m passionate about it).
(Sorry, Sarah. I am *still* awake…getting to bed now. Too much shopping online and reading vs. working…now I’m hogging your comment box again!)
