Well, last week was a funny week. I did not meet my goal of getting 10 blog posts queued up for my authority site. I did manage to get 10 done so basically I wrote 2 posts a day. So what exactly did I do the rest of my time? I managed to write 7 articles throughout my week for ezine submissions. So that was enough to back link 2 xfactor sites. To some this may look like not much work done at all but considering I ended my work days around 2 or 3 pm and I took off the entire day on Thursday due to a last minute schedule change. My sister was going to take my son to the local zoo with the kids that she nanny’s for (there is a boy my son’s age so it would be perfect) but then she called to tell me that the family car did not have a seatbelt in the middle. Since my son was ready to go and excited about going; I couldn’t let him down, so I ended up having to go too to drive us there. It was actually a really enjoyable day. So for 4 days of half days of work, it does seem pretty productive to me at least.
When I originally talked about the correlation between LSI and the Mayday update, I decided to test this theory out on 3 of my xfactor sites. I tested site #24 (which is 7 months old), site #31 (4 months old) and #86 (about3 months old). As a result of the mayday update site #24 and #31 were beyond page 10 in the SERPs and site #86 was at position #24 in the SERPs. When I decided to test out the LSI theory, I went ahead and edited the first page of content by adding a minimum of 4 more LSI words and used each LSI word twice. I decided to add 1 article ezine backlink to just site #86. It has now been 3 weeks and these are the results.
Site #24 still lost in the SERPs but it is #1 in Yahoo and #10 in Bing.
Site #31 still lost in the SERPs but its #5 in both Yahoo and Bing.
Site #86 is position #17. It moved up from its previous position of #24.
This mini test seems to support the idea more that quality backlinks are the way to boost sites that lost their rankings due to the algorithm change. It doesn’t matter if you spam 1,000 article directories with articles to get backlinks. What is going to matter is the quality of the backlink, its the same thing that has been preached about all along. Essentially nothing has changed with this. All I know is when I embarked my xfactor empire, I originally started off my first few sites as John suggested using just his article marketing suggestion. I hated article writing and ran into some issues with ezines accepting a few of my articles or just giving me a hard time. This had deterred me from wanting to backlink my sites with John’s suggestions. So then I moved on to find services that could aid in the backlinking and those services did help; but still, the quality of those backlinks was not there.
I kind of knew that in the end, I would be returning to article marketing as John had suggested. So even this past week while I wrote my blog posts for the site I am working on building out, I knew I would be writing articles for ezine submission in order to get my better performing xfactor sites back to ranking again. I wholeheartedly believe that the reason why my sites dropped in ranking is due primarily to the fact that I did not article market them as John suggested and why a few of my close friends did not have their sites effected. The difference between us was that I was using every backlinking method that could automate or speed up the backlinking method while they slaved away writing their articles. Ultimately; my sites suffered and theirs did not budge.
I will be sure to update you with the results of the sites I was working on article marketing last week.
Adsense earnings have been ok. Yesterday I did $27.00, Saturday I did $14.85 and Friday I did $20.83. Today looks promising, its only 11:30 am and I am already at $14.44.

FINALLY! I was going through Sarah withdrawal.. haha

@Sara – I think that is the conclusion I came to. At this point, I am working on new sites. But I am just working on making sure my SEO is sound, both on page and off, and that my content is high quality and also extensive.
To reinforce the idea that quality backlinks are still king, I have a site that I ran 80 profile backlinks for (backlinks phillipines), and it has gone from #17 to #9 for a very competitive term (9900 exact local). This change has already generated $45 in sales (it’s an affiliate site), in 3 days since the increase.

Haha…”Sara Withdrawl”.
Your Backlinks Philippines results are awesome Matthew. My site used with the free package is on page 2 and is bouncing by 3 slots on page 2 for the past few days. As much as I am tempted to through some ezine articles at it, I will not so that my test is pure.
I was completely stalking you on twitter.. your not allowed to buy anymore video games.. haha

Interesting article. I think with a lot of these systems it’s about tweaking them to what works best for you. If you can’t handle writing so many articles then going about backlinking makes a low more sense as it’s not such hard work. I guess these systems aren’t as effective now after Mayday but we need to think long-term. In a few years these sites will hopefully be considered more authoritative and SERP position and income should go up (well that’s what I keep telling myself anyway!)
Can I ask how many sites you have at present based on your Adsense earnings?

Hi Sara,
Good to see your adsense earning coming back. When you are writing articles. Say you have a website about training horses, do you write your articles about training horses etc.? or do you write your articles about anything you like? say like tv or
cars etc
I have done a mixture of writing both on topic and some off topic. The past 2 weeks I have been writing about unrelated niches because its easier for me to bust out an article on whatever comes to mind that day.
I have about 102 websites that feature adsense on them.
Way to go Sara! I agree with you, taking shortcuts is a dangerous game in IM. It may work for some time, but eventually Google will catch up. I hate article writing as well (and I take very long to do it since English is not my first language), but I have written some last week to be on the safe side.
It’s good to have a nice diversity of backlinks. I love profile backlinks, they’re so easy to do (and cheap to outsource), but you can’t rely on that alone. I also do a bit social bookmarking, some articles and some blog commenting or forum posting to spice things up a little.

I also agree its nice to have diverse backlinks so that things appear more natural looking. I don’t social bookmark as much as I should but this past week or so I have been bookmarking more.
Im still not convinced about article backlinks being quality. If they are in text and on high pr pages, then sure. But an ezine backlink is in a resource box, and the page is nearly always n/a. Also, your getting multiple links from the same domain, which surely weakens subsequent links.
So John relies on getting his ezines republished, but whats the difference between getting republished on a few sites, and submitting the same article to loads of different web 2.0 blogs and article directories? There is no difference, except submitting the same article yourself, at least they are gonna be on high pr domains. Most articles that from ezine that are republished are done by various plugins, and republished on low pr autoblogs and spammy sites. The links are often no follow too.
Im not saying i have the answers, im just trying to think logically about what makes an article backlink “quality” since the actual link is at the bottom of the page in a resource box on a pr n/a page.
on the other hand i built 500 profile backlinks whilst I watched england get spanked 4-1 by germany
then i built another 1200 when I was in the pub drowning my sorrows. Then I made 200 blog comments whilst I slept off the beer.
The results of these recent dabblings are yet to be seen, I will of course keep you posted…
In your example of ezines and the resource box, you are talking about page authority. A link coming from the ezine’s domain registers it as a domain authority link. A Domain Authority link has power to help identify our site as having some authority as well. That is why we are interested in using ezine submissions regardless as to whether or not our page with our actual article has a high PR.

yes but a profile link from a pr 6 forum is the same. So what makes 1 article link so much better than 1 forum link?
I’m not an authority on this at all (right, Michelle?) =) BUT I know that an article in a public directory versus a profile or signature link holds more weight. My thinking:
1) Profile links get deleted by the droves…unless you’re genuinely participating in the forum, and making a regular contribution. Of course it depends on the moderators of the forums, but I think this is a clear disadvantage.
2) Articles remain for months and even years, can be ranked themselves with a little work, depending on the SEO done on the article itself. One of my competitors just usurped one of my sites for #1 in Google…with an EzineArticle!
Drats! But: good on him/her. It’s business…
3) From a human perspective, an article can generate actual human traffic. Too often it seems everyone’s concerned about the SE’s alone, whereas a better business model considers the human reader.

James,
Point 1 – there are many automated ways to keep your profiles alive, plus for every 1 that is deleted, I add 100 more.
2. what happens when ezine get google slapped? It’s only a matter of time…. plus they could go no follow, or change policy which results in articles getting deleted.
3. Yup, your right, although I would much rather have direct search engine traffic that isn’t filtered through that giant MFA trap known as ezine. Plus I am convinced that a decent portion of the clickthroughs is other internet marketers checking you out.
Anyway, I really think that sweating for hours writing ezine articles will not work out well for sara if she goes down that road. It may feel good going back to basics and following Obi John Kenobi, but I think there are far better ways to spend your limited backlinking time.
Think about what you need – backlinks. Then think about the easiest way of getting them, and lots of them, so that you never have to worry about them again.
The old adage about working smarter and not harder has really proven itself to me this month so far. Just because something feels like hard work, it doesn’t mean its beneficial. And just because something else seems too easy, doesn’t mean its worthless.
I will leave you with those sage words, and retire to my boudoir.
Dan-
I was going to comment but instead will be posting about my results with article marketing. I understand that you want to do the least amount of work, I get that.
For various reasons, however, I’m considering the overall picture of the proposal (forum links v. article links) and on several fronts, forum links fail to reach my goals for my business.
More on that at The Average Genius, I definitely don’t want to start another debate…I think I chased off Jackson already!
=)
James, you bring up some very valid points to support article back links as being a long-term winner.
Dude. Check it, Daniel-San. I posted a small reply on my blog.
Actually, the reply to you was only a small part of the post. And I hope you don’t take offense at it, but at almost 6k words, I’m glad I didn’t try to fit the response in this nexted box.
Hey, all: happy Independence Day! Well, to those of you on this side of the pond.
Huge BBQ, with launching rockets, some CornHole, and maybe a nap…I’m in!

Haha, well I did play it most of the day yesterday. I got sucked into building a house that took me hours. I like that sort of stuff. I usually don’t get much accomplished on Saturdays and Sundays so I don’t do IM work then. I don’t even check up on this blog over the weekend except maybe once or twice to see if anyone is duking it out in the comments.
Article backlinks are so worth is especially when someone republishes it.
I have one micro niche site that has all the pages on the site a PR 2 now from a couple articles published on a PR 5 site.
The rankings alone from cranking out articles is worth it. Stick with the hard work and let it pay off.
That’s true Dan. I have had a few of my ezine or Goarticle submissions picked up naturally by other blogs and that is a definite bonus to posting to authority article directories. People trust ezines so they know republishing an article from ezines is not going to be junk content.
I’ve never had much of a problem writing ezines, especially since what you write about doesn’t have to relate to your anchor text and links. To get started I go to the title suggestion tool, type in stuff I’m interested in, and I get stuff to write on.
That’s a great tip Ross. Thanks!
Can you tell me how did it go with ultimate keyword theme extractor you mentioned in your first lsi mayday post, after adding lsi words using UKTE did you see any improvement in rankings, as i am thinking of buying it. your reply will help me to decide to get it or not.
Honestly, I did not see improvement based on LSI alone. I only saw improvement to one of my sites where I added the LSI words and then also added an ezine article to. So, I think if you add both LSI words and some article marketing to your sites; you will be in good shape.
