I’ve been building xfactor sites for almost 2 months now and I am stuck at the $5 day earning rut. With 22 sites this has not only been bothering me but it has also been bugging Mike. So the other night Mike asked if he could take a look at some of my sites to evaluate their rankings, competition and monthly searches etc. After he took a look at some of my sites and asked me some more questions like: how many sites receive 2900+ monthly searches? how many sites are on page?; he had guessed that I maybe only had about 10 xfactor sites that fit the criteria necessary to rank properly.
He was close, I came up with only 8 websites that were ranking on page 1 and of those 8 only 4 of them get 2900+ monthly searches. Ouch! So Mike says “Earning $5 a day with only 4 true xfactor sites is pretty good. You just need to focus on building a lot of sites similar with the keyword research you did for those.”
Now Mike was kind enough to help me with my sites and I didn’t ask him to. He is just an honest, good man that whole-heartedly wants to see me succeed with earning an income from home. Please do not run over to Mike and bombard him with requests to look at your sites. And if I find out that any of you did, well then I will tell Santa Claus to not only leave you coal in your Christmas stocking this year but that your kids’, kids’, kids will receive nothing but coal! And don’t even get me started on what Rudolf will do to your car. Seriously, do not pester Mike ok? He is working hard to build a full time income too and he doesn’t have to time to evaluate everyone’s sites. I just figured by posting this and giving you some more tips, it will help you evaluate your own sites and strive to target better keywords.
Ok, so here are some tips to help you with building your xfactor sites empire:
1.) Only target 3 word keyword phrases (2 words can often be harder to rank for and 4 keywords will be harder to article market with ezines since they only allow 3 word anchored text in the resource box)
2.) Only grab sites that receive 2,900 or higher monthly searches (do pay attention to local and global searches only if there is a major discrepancy such as the local search is showing 1,000 but the global is showing 6,000.) I use “phrase” match when I am conducting keyword research. I have seen a slew of sites during my research where people targeted keywords that only receive a monthly search of like 1,000 sites. Even if the CPC is high, you might be better off just moving onto a keyword that gets higher monthly searches because if you build sites with a lower monthly count like 1,000, you are going to have to build 3-4 more sites to make up for the income you would be earning if you have just built 1 site with 2,900+ monthly searches. So which would you rather do, spend more time on good keyword research and build 100 sites and earn $50+ a day or build 300 sites to earn the same $50+ a day?
3.) Only grab a domain if your exact keyword is available. If it isn’t, move onto another keyword. I have 4 xfactor sites that had an added word to the keyword phrase and unfortunately all four have yet to make it to page 1.
4.) Mike’s best advice: “Do not be so mechanical with your keyword research. If I had done that, I would have missed out on a lot of good keywords that are earning me some decent money now. After you build enough sites, you just get to the point where you can easily take a look and know without a doubt on whether or not you can take the competition”. In other words do not go after a word just because you see only “x” amount of PR0 sites which is 1 less than “ideal”. Likewise do not be too confident and go after words that have too many PR4’s on it. You really gotta listen to your gut feeling with your keyword research. I know this seems hard for many because they feel they do not have enough experience with keyword research or page 1 domination but just take a look at your first xfactor sites? How many PR 4’s are there on the page? If you look at your previous sites, it will give you a rough idea of what sites you can take on competition-wise.
5.) Mike’s juicy new tip: If you have built a site and it is ranking on page 1 and earning money, go back and snag any available same top level domains for it. Meaning if you are ranking the .org then go back and see if the .net is available. If so, grab it and build the site using a different design like a wordpress template. The reason why you will want another template design is because if it ranks nicely too, you don’t want Google to look at both of your sites and think they are exact copies since they will obviously already be using the same main keyword. You want to please google by making your second site give your visitors value. Also make sure the content is not identical and that you target new keywords for the other pages of content.
The reason why this is good is because you know that domains act as real estate so if you own 2 positions on page 1, you are dominating twice as much traffic and twice as much earning potential.
On a good note, I did earn $21.82 in adsense yesterday. That is now my highest adsense day!

Hi Sara,
Ezine allows up to five words in your anchor text if you have Expert Author status and your article is longer than 400 words, excluding common words like ‘is’. This is a recent change you can read about on their blog here: http://blog.ezinearticles.com/2009/11/anchor-text-rule.html.
I’m going to be trying a four word keyword anchor to see if I get any hassle from them or if they evaluate my submission any differently. Might open up some more opportunities as 400 words is not appreciably more difficult for me than 250. I use Dragon Naturally Speaking for my articles so I can babble on an extra minute lol.
I enjoy your blog and I’m rooting for you btw. Keep plugging away!
Hi Jay,
Thanks for your support and for the info on ezines. It seemed like I was getting rejected for 4 keyword phrases every time, although I never paid attention if my articles were shorter than 400 words. I’ll have to test that out too because I had some inner pages that were 4 words that I had to forget about using ezines with and just submitted articles to Goarticles. I never saw any indication that if I wrote a longer article I could have more words in my anchored text.
I need to get back into using my Dragon Naturally Speaking again. My carpal tunnel has pretty much gone away since I started more outsourcing but for the past 2 weeks I have been writing a lot of content again.
Very interesting advice from Mike. I like the idea of maintaining the first two spots in google for your keywords that are earning good money. i haven’t thought of that strategy. I may look into those domains to see if they are available.
Yea, I have gotten greedy on domains lately. I have found some domains that got 6,000 monthly searches so I snagged both the .org and .net just to be safe. Today I got a domain with 12,000 searches but I did not grab the .org because mike suggests testing it out first to see if it is profitable, then returning to buy the domains. So I am on the fence about it.
Its soooooo worth buyng up the domains, if they have a relatively low SOC then chances are you’ll rank pretty quick on the first page.
Firstly, well done Sara, its good to see that you’re hitting $20 a day. Well done, I was hitting that a few weeks ago until I completely stopped and focussed on the XFactor sites which bought me right down to only a few $$s per day.
Anyway, you’re right about grabbing as many available domains as possible, Ive done tis with a few and guess what? Im either on the first page or on the second. Its amazing considering all I did was setup a Wordpress installation with only a few lines of text…(still awaiting my copy). The tip here is to ensure that your domain has privacy installed, this way Google can;t figure out if you’re the same person. I registered more than 5 domains at a time at GoDaddy so I got it for free. It works wonders.
I agree with you on the 3 keyword phrase terms, Im actually going for 4 or even five termed phrases, it isnt easy to find these so naturally Im quite chuffed to find terms that are 4-5 keywords and get exact phrase matches of over 3,000 per month. The only problem with these is that there isnt scope to expand these.
Anyway just thought I’d add something that may add value to you and your readers. Love the posts, keep them up and if theres anything that I can help with, just shout!!

Good luck with your 4 and 5 keyword phrases. I’d love to hear how you do with ranking them.
Sara,
What kind of backlinking methods are you employing? DO you see your rankings fluctuate quite often?
Thanks
Zaheer
Hi Zaheer,
Right now the only additional back linking methods I am using is Unique Article Wizard. It’s the best set and forget method.
Although I must say I do have several links from the link juicer showing up in my google webmaster tools so those back links are good.
I wouldn’t say that my sites are fluctuating very much. Pretty much if they do the google dance, its within 1-2 days of ranking for page 1 shortly after being indexed.
Hi Sara — you are using phrase match to find your keywords with 2900+ per month search traffic? I’ve been using exact. That would explain why it takes me so long to come up with keywords to use.
As an aside, I’m calling my thesis vs custom xfactor experiment done. Conclusion: thesis ranks quicker, but how quickly is not consistent. The first time I ran the experiment, google indexed the thesis site many days ahead of the custom xfactor theme. For the second experiment, the thesis site only beat the custom theme by two days. Not a big deal, I think. As far as serps, no meaningful difference(#8 and #6), though comparing the two in terms of serp would be an apples-oranges comparison because they’re different keywords.
Hi Stacey,
Yes, I use phrase match. I have noticed thread’s like Clickbump’s suggests using the exact match but I am not sure I want to go that route since most people do not enter their search in quotes when using Google.
That’s great that the Thesis theme gets indexed faster and for long term use, that may be the method to go with using xfactor sites. The xfactor template gets pretty old looking after awhile. lol
sorry, i may be way off the mark here, but i thought exact match meant the number of times people search for a phrase exactly i.e just ‘bosch dishwasher’ rather than phrase match like ‘what is the best bosch dishwasher’. I thought it had nothing to do with actual searchers using brackets or quotations etc, thats just for us when looking at search volumes?
Yes, I believe you are correct Adam. Google’s keyword matching options can be found here but its more for adword users.
I know there are some people that prefer to use only exact searches when building their xfactor sites but I just stick with what I am familiar with which is phrase matching.
You are correct Adam.
I always use exact match when doing my keyword research.
That way, I get more accurate results.
My interpretation is in line with Adam’s. I don’t look at exact to determine how people search, but rather to gauge search volume and potential profitability for a specific phrase. I don’t view how people search or the number of pages returned for a search as particularly relevant, though it seems some people do and I’ve never understood why.
IMHO, if you’re trying to snipe keywords you almost have to use exact. If you’re looking at data that lumps ‘blue widgets’ and ‘blue widgets suck’ together your volume numbers are almost certainly inflated and your results may end up way out of line with your expectations.
I agree Jay, I guess when I am using phrase match, I am hoping to pull in traffic from people that are generally looking for “blue widgets” and some of that traffic from people that are also searching for “blue widgets suck”.
Sara,
Very interesting post. Can I ask you if the 21.00 of adsense was mostly due to the hubpages in past or authority types of sites? I was wondering what contributed to them aside from the xfactor sites. It looks like Mike’s advice is very helpful and it may be worth it to write longer ezinearticles articles in order to use a 4 word phrase.
Deb
For that particular day, $13 of it was earned by my two niche blogs, $0.48 from Hubpages and the rest was between 2 Xfactor sites. One which earned $6.24 from 2 clicks.
Yea, now that I know that you can submit longer articles for ezines in order to get 4 word anchored text, I will have to start that.
That’s great that you’re now in the $20s in a day
Thanks for all the tips, it’s great that you got all that advice from Mike and that you’re sharing it. Unfortunately I haven’t been working on my XF sites enough but I still plan to continue so will bear all of this in mind!
Ruth – Web Career Girl´s last blog ..I Completed My 50,000 Word Challenge in 27 Days
I am very interested to see how this week’s sites do since I am launching 4 new sites that I researched last week using Mike’s advice. I paid particular close to my competition and I only targeted keywords with 2900+ phrase matched searches. Although 2 of them have an even larger amount of searches. We shall see how they do!
It’s really a new thing for me that tow words keywords can be harder to get ranking. Amazing tips you have provided in this post. Very informative site.
Hey Sara,
One of my niche blogs from amy is doing a little bit. Is that what you are seeing results from? Most of mine are not doing too well so I am trying to see if that method does work if the keywords are low competition as well as buying words. I do have some pagerank for some of those blogs so I am trying to add more articles that are low competition but maybe that’s a waste of time . What do you think?
Deb
Yea, my main blog that is doing well was a blog built through Amy’s system. I built 3 niche blogs per Amy’s system and 2 of them have been my biggest monthly income earners. I am certain the reason why the blog has done so well was because of finding low competition keywords to write posts about.
Honestly, when I wrote those blog posts, I never knew the specifics of having to use the keyword density properly. I am sure over 50% of the posts on my blogs only contain the keyword once. lol So I think the reason why I am ranking well for some keywords on the particular blog I mentioned that earns about $9-12.00 daily; is because I used low competition keywords and made sure they were in the title. There are even tons of PR 4 and PR 5’s on the page and my site only has a PR 0.
I would say that most of the keywords I targeted for the blogs had anywhere from 500-1,000 monthly phrase searches. The thing I wish I had paid attention to was the CPC. I probably would never have gone after the keyword I did had I seen that 90% of the related keywords all only get about $0.05 CPC. If I had higher CPC’s I probably would easily be making $50 a day alone with that blog. lol
In your case, if you are ranking for your keywords and are getting decent CPC then yea, I would continue to add more articles with low competition. I found that even writing several posts on the same keyword phase could help you rank for them. In fact; I know that is how I am ranking for some words because I did write a few posts with the same keywords in the title and I rank in the first or second page for them without any back linking. The inner pages that I did back link to are easily ranking somewhere on the first page.
However; I think one of the biggest decisions in building up your niche site/blog empire is looking at the investment. Is a site/blog ranking so horribly that is it worth spending a month nursing it with more content and back links when maybe you could have built 10+ niche sites or just 1 or 2 of Amy’s niche styled blogs during that same time? It’s a question that only you can answer. I think the scariest thing is just focusing too much time on one blog and then one day have it poof! Like recently my beauty niche blog. It had been steady on page 1 in position 4-5 for over 7 months, 3 weeks ago I started adding more back links as I saw another site creeping up that is the .org of my domain and the next thing I know, my site has been on page 4 for 3 weeks. Miraculously it still earned $146.00 this month. So I guess that is proof that those low competition keywords are worth going after because I assume that is the only way I received traffic and affiliate sales this month on it.
The thing about Amy’s method is that it definitely works but with so many steps, it makes getting one blog fully completed entirely too long and my clock is ticking for me. I was shooting to earn a full time income by January and I am going to try my hardest to get there. I am hoping xfactor sites will do it for me.
Hey Sara,
Thank you for your long reply (by the way I emailed you last week but maybe you are busy!). I do have a nicheblogger blog making 5 a day and what I’m doing now is just doing low competition words but not driving myself crazy with all the advice she gives re marketing the site . Instead I’m just doing simpler techniques (ie the usual ezinearticles, rss feeds, profile backlinks , uaw etc etc). The thing is because I do have many pages on page 1, I figure why not add more to this blog itself rather than to start with a new domain… Google dances with new sites whereas with a more established blog it’s easier to do backlinking etc.
By the way, I think though your blog dropped to page 4 it will come back again. I had a page that was on page 1 number 10. I decided to do 30 backlinks to it and then it moved to page 4. I was kicking myself as I really didn’t need to add those links but figured I’d re-inforce my position. BACKFIRED! But, now it’s number 1 on page 2 so I think there is hope again (it took a few weeks). I wish I knew the story about backlinking in terms of it bumping you backwards but that is a big secret at the headquarters I’m sure.
It will be good to compare the nicheblogger with xfactor approaches as I do think that the authority blogs can withstand extra backlinks, allow for added pages easily and may resemble xfactor’s original model which was a big authority site in health. I personally find it easy to do a few posts a week and a few ezinearticles to backlink it and I wonder if her steps in month 2 and 3 were really necessary anyway.
Deb
Thanks for sharing your experience. What kind of click through rate are you getting with the sites?
I Jessie. The click thru rate is anywhere from 15-57%.
It’s very Interesting! Great! I really enjoy your Experience. It’s really a new step for me how I get best ranking. Thanks you sooooo much

Sara,
I was just wondering when you go by 2900 searches monthly, are you looking at Local or Global counts? I’m using MNF and not sure which one to go by.
Also for anyone using Exact match, what is the minimum search count you go for?
Thanks,
Cheryl
I go no lower than 3000 searches using exact match.
Hi Cheryl,
I would always go for Exact Match as your research will be more accurate. I always go for exact. One of my mistakes that I made in the early days was that I bought lots of domains with search volume based on broad match, since I purchased MNF and realised how effective exact is, I only realised that some of these domains were only getting like 260 searches a month etc.
Ok now moving on; you really want to look at global search since this targets all global traffic. What I do is becaused Im based int he UK look to see where I have a better chance of ranking. If there is a nominal difference in traffic but a big difference in SOC values I tend to target the lower soc value.
I have domains that have searches in excess of 3k, 4k, 5K ans even 6K per month and yet recently I bought a domain (in fact 2, .net and .org) whcih only had search volues of 1,300 and it ranked in position 11 & 11 respectively. Now this is where even I was shocked. IT was averaging a CPC of about $0.70 and I average between $1-3 per day on this. Ive developed one of the sites with 5 paegs and left the other site with only 1 500 word holding page. I’ll see which terms rank and then just rewrite them for the .org.
So moral of the story is to really do your due dilligence and if somethign looks tasy go for it. 3,000 searched per month is always nice but if you can rank better for something lower that also has a decent CPC then why not go for it?
Also, what I do, is Im VERY thorough with my research, some people find it difficult but I actually enjoy it. I have a spreadsheet which I create for each term and I basically put down the PR of each top 10 listing whcih give me an overview of its ‘rankability’.
Ok sorry to babble on, I hope some of what has been said helps.
Any questions with keeyword analysis, research, or anything then just shout. I havent been on here much recently but Ill try to help in any way I can. Sara has a great blog.
Thanks
Zaheer
Hi All,
Just a quick question, for those of you who are finding some success with the XFactor sites or just general AdSense niche sites, what off page marketing has been working for you?
Would love to hear from feedback. Any ‘outside the box’ ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Zaheer
Thanks to Heimuir and especially Nettech for the helpful information. I’m just about to buy some domains and wanted to make sure I was doing it right.
Thanks again,
Cheryl
You’re welcome Cheryl, we’re all in thos together sp of my knowledge helps others then excellent.
If the domain is worthwhile, I tend to snap any that are available, for example if .net & .org are available, I register these and then ensure privacy is enabled, this way Google or no-one else can track these back to the same owner, Ive found this to work wonders. Ive gor .com/.net & .org for one and all of them are on page 2 one after the other, its actually quite funny.
I use GoDaddy as they give you free privacy when you order more than 5…otherwise it can get quite pricey…..
Good luck.
Zaheer
This is very useful for a newbie blogger like me. I have been to so many blogs and your blog is one of the best. Thanks for sharing this post with us.
