I cannot believe I am approaching 3 weeks of being moved back home with my parents. It doesn’t feel it has bee that long and maybe its because I still have so much on my plate. Right now my parents and I have been making trips back to San Jose to clear out stuff I do not plan on bringing back home with me and some stuff I need to place in a storage unit. My dad is a contractor, so he has been working on putting in tile floors in the master bathroom and this week he is painting the inside. Goodbye purple bedroom walls…sniff. I am hoping my sister finds a place in the next 2 weeks so that she can move out and we get some renters in by the end of September. Once I get renters in place, I know I will be able to truly have an enormous financial burden lifted off my shoulders and I will be able to start to breathe again.
Last week I was working on a site I had mentioned in a previous post. This site had caught my attention when out of no where it just started earning money consistently everyday. When I had first noticed the site, I saw that it has earned $20 in about 10 days but when I looked at the adsense earnings it did in the last 7 days it was even more surprising because it had earned $25…even!
I finally placed Google Analytics on it around the 12th of August and it is absolutely astounding to me on how the site is getting traffic. It’s still rather a mystery to me because its not getting search traffic but rather referral traffic from google. I am not even sure what that means exactly. All I know is that one particular inner page is getting the bulk of the traffic from Google in some manner.
As you can see, only about 4% of my traffic is coming from search inquires the rest is from referrals. But what is Google doing to make it be a referral rather than a search result??? I have no clue.
Well whatever…all I know is that this site is getting a decent amount of traffic and its primarily due to one inner page. The even crazier thing is that the particular page that is getting the bulk of the traffic/pageviews is not ranking at all. It is no where to be found on the first 10 page results. This proves to me more so than ever that it is important to slip in those LSI words into your content because the keywords that are getting the traffic on throughout my site were not keyword phrases I was purposely targeting but rather they contain one or two words of my original keywords that I was specifically targeting.
The main reason why I am writing this post is to encourage all of you that have been building xfactor micro niche sites to look at the bigger picture for your micro niche sites because there indeed is a much larger picture. John “Xfactor” just laid out the basic foundation for you to begin with a micro niche site but he has stated time and time again that his purpose was never to bust out tons of short 1-5 page micro niche sites. The term “micro niche site” has been interpreted by the majority (myself included) to mean a micro site. That is not what the term “micro niche site” means. A micro niche site means its a small piece of a larger niche. For example if we used the weight loss niche well then a micro niche of weight loss would be “weight loss tea” or whatever.
One of the most recent videos that I was privileged to view that was available on John’s private forum; which is now closed for good, due to some jerk that ripped off another forum member when selling off some micro niche sites. Apparently the transaction went sour and they have now dragged John into the drama because it was “his forum” in which the two parties involved made the sale arrangements. Anyhow, in the video John was touching again on the very same topics I just mentioned. Like how many people have run out and bought up tons of domains and made quick 1-5 page sites and moved onto the next site. He was saying in the video how great it would be if people could just focus on maybe one site at a time. Take your one site that is earning $1-5 a day and build it out. Just work on it a few months and watch to see that the site earns about 5 times the amount it was before.
Who wouldn’t want to see a site go from earning $5 a day to earning you $25+ a day after just a few months of working on it. This video was very motivational and helped me confirm that what I have been working on pretty much since the mayday update happened is the right choice for me. At the end of the day you have to think of your xfactor sites as if you were a fisherman. The larger the net (larger the site size in content pages) the more fish (visitors) you will catch. More fish = more $$$!
So last week I worked on the site mentioned in this post earlier which has the screenshots of the analytics. On Sunday this site did $8.89 on its own, and let me again remind you that my site is not ranking….at all! Yet, it somehow is earning consistently everyday and maybe its because I am spreading its wings wider. It now has 13 blog posts. Last week I added about 4 pages of new content and then I spent the rest of my days writing articles to submit to ezines and then resubmitted the same ones once they were approved to Articlebase. I also bookmarked my new pages with Bookmarking Demon.
I will probably continue to work on the site to bring it up to about 60 pages and make sure each page has links from article marketing and then move onto the next of my most profitable sites. Now, I will have domains that need to be renewed from here on out and I see myself letting go of about 70% of my sites. I will have to take a good look at my domains and if I felt they earned at least more income than the domain renewal for the year and sites I see with potential, I will keep. Otherwise I will let the domains expire and just take the content from the sites to use as article submissions. That way I will feel at least the content does not go to waste, especially considering I had invested quite a bit in outsourcing them. I am writing all of my own content right now though. I want to have pride in these authority sites so I don’t see myself outsourcing my site content at this time.
Update on September 1, 2010:
Ah-ha! As James and Zaheer have mentioned the referral traffic is indeed from my images. When I did a keyword search for my main keyword and then clicked on image results, one of my photos is #2 at the top so its no wonder why I am getting a bunch of referral traffic from Google. I love Google! (Well at least for today.)

Thanks for the insight. I was always under the impression that when people talked about the “micro niche site”, it meant a small site. But I see the important distinction (a very important one) that you make. Although I am not quite ready for making the leap to a site like that, I will keep this information in mind when the time comes.
kidgas recently posted..Hoping for a Strong End of August Plus Free Golf
I plan on setting up the rest of my niche sites and then after a few months taking a step back and analyzing how they are doing. If I see a few of them have some really good potential I plan on going back and adding more content to the sites and making them have even more potential. I haven’t decided if I am going to just not renew the ones that don’t make money or try to expand on these as well to see if I can get them ranking for them as well.
Have you considered selling the sites that you want to let go of on Flippa? Even if you just make a little bit of profit from them it’s better than just not renewing them.

I definitely think it is smart to test the waters to find out which niches are going to have the most success. I’d hate to look at my portfolio and say that is what I have done but basically it is what I have done. turned out 100 sites but only found about 20-30% of them are worth keeping and building up. Could have been worse I suppose.
Yes, I have thought about selling off some sites on Flippa but I really do not want to deal with the transfer process. It scares me to death to think about me doing all the database setups etc for someone else in order to transfer the sites over.
Wp actually has a built in export and import function if that is what you are using. Use fantastico to install wp for them, upload your template, import the posts / pages, transfer the domain, and then change the nameservers to re-direct and presto done.
Transferring is pretty easy with wp .
Wow. You know, you’re da-bomb – great intel, as usual.
I have a theory – and it has to do with images, videos and “Alt” tags – do you have these on your sites?
Just curious as so many of the 1st page results are:
News (Press Releases)
Video
Images
Maybe you’re getting more traffic from your images being scraped and published by Google images, etc.? Just a thinkin’ aloud.

It had totally slipped my mind that it was the images that was getting a referral. I am so glad I have always placed at least 1 image in my posts and will definitely make it a must-have on future posts.
YAYYYYYYYY!!!! Finally an update! You know this has inspired me to keep working on one of my sites (as you know I have 2). I just want to get that earning about $10 a day to start before moving onto the next one and so on. I’m sure it will take AGES but i’m willing to ride it out. You my dear, Are AWESOME!
Ben recently posted..Plumbers in Orange County
I’m glad I can inspire you to work on those 2 sites Ben. I really do think its worth it. Its how John “xfactor” is able to make thousands of dollars a month from his health authority site. Sure, it will take time and even years to mimic John’s health site since last I read he had thousands of pages on it, but it sure is worth his effort. I definitely think it is wise to have to work hard for a few years and then see the success of your site as it brings in a residual income for many years to come.
Patience is definitely short lived in this business but good things come to those who put in the effort continuously.
Thanks, Ben, but please – don’t call me “dear.”
It’s…well…just not my style.
(What? He was talking to Sara? This ISN’T my blog? Crap…)
Er…
Ben: I wish I had the horse sense to do what you’re doing, and that I found this blog early on, too. Instead I have 10 or so up, with…65?…total.
JamestheJust on Elance recently posted..Make Money Online And Don’t Pay A Dime – Newbie Orientation
Hi Sara,
Hope you’re well, its been a while and I apologise for not posting, just had soo much on with family etc.
I saw your post and can confirm from experience that your referral traffic is indeed most likely coming from Google Image search.
There’s actually no way of finding out which keyword is being searched for via G Analytics but what you can do is go into Google Webasmter Tools and then under keywords there is an option to choose ‘images’ from my drop down if my memory serves me correctly. This should then give you an idea of what people are typing in. I made this a standard practice a few years ago and had a feeling Image search would come in handy later on at some point, non of these sites are XFactor type sites but about 2 years old.
Its always good to read your posts. I actually a few days ago went to one of my sites and added about 3 or so images to each post. The trick is in the file naming convention and also the ‘Alt’ text. For example, ‘your-main-keyword-product.jpg and also then use something similar (LSI) as the ‘Alt’ text. You then add this image within a paragraph of text (either align it left or right) and that should work.
My sites are like yours, dead and nowhere to be found for ‘web’ organic search but absolutely thriving for image search and for some VERY competitive terms. The CTR will be considerably lower but I’d rather have some than none. Ona verage they generate between 20-40 uniqyes per day and majority through image search.
The other thing I’m experimenting with is making the images have some kind of call to action so visitors are tempted to click on them.
Just a tip, Google are very clever with images, so if you copy them from somewhere (which I wouldn’t recommend) they kind of work out if its a dupe. If you use Amazon images, its a good idea to crop the, change them about a bit and definitely change the filename.
All the best.
Zaheer
Its so nice to see your post. I had been wondering how things were going for you. I hope your kids are doing well.
Ah-ha! I totally forgot about my images. That makes perfect sense. I have gotten pretty good about naming my images with the keyword and the alt but I never thought about making the alt have LSI words. Thanks for that tidbit Zaheer!
Thanks for the reply.
As always, love the posts, I do read them regularly
Things are better, all this Mayday stuff has really kind of thrown me off, been trying to do all sorts but I think that maybe all the sites have been sandboxed. Its just so VERY VERY frustrating to check your stats and they are still sitting on page 10 or something
Anyway, glad you liked the tip. I KNOW for a fact that it works coz I’ve been using it for about 2 years or so with consistent success.
Anyway, just shout if I can help with anything!
Z
holy moly. That was helpful! Thanks, Zaheer – great tips.

No worries, glad to be able to help James
Ah, glad to know Xfactor sites still work. On another note, I always thought that there was no difference between “referral traffic” and “search traffic” from Google; why else would Google send me traffic if someone did not search for a specific term for which my site ranked (of course if I would have used PPC, it would have been different, but I don’t)?
BTW, would you mind telling me which social bookmarking plugin you use? I love the “big and cool” look of the buttons.
I think the images is the major difference between search traffic and referral. As you can see in my google analytics screen shots that my search engine traffic is very low and that is because my site is not ranking at all but its getting the bulk of the traffic as a “referral” meaning that someone searched for my keyword but perhaps decided to click on the “images” tab in the search. When they do a search by images, my image is the 2nd one on top of the results so that is why I am getting so many hits.
Sara,
Just found out how to get the keywords from Google Webmaster Tools
Google Webmaster Tools > Choose your domain > Your Site on the Web > Search Queries > Dropdown with ‘All’ should be changed to ‘Image’
That should pretty much give you an idea as to which keywords are ranking in which position oh and from which country as well!

@ ben It doesn’t take that long depends how much work you put into it.It’s like growing a tree. How many seeds do you want to plant?
Do you want to start with 1 site or 10 sites. I suggest 10-20 sites with lots of inner page keywords. Then light promotion maybe a few profiles
and article submission social bookmarking web 2.0. Then 2nd month move it up a bit. By 3rd month your site shouoldn’t dance 2 much and
you should be able to do heavier backlinking assuming it’s not ranking already. (if you did kw research right they should rank well).
So yea if u get 1 site up then it will take a long time unless it’s a site with 20-30 kws. Because you prob wont’ see money until 1-3 months later.
- I should make a blog but i’m lazy lol. Only making 65 a day and spent way 2 much money learning and making mistakes. Just started learning how to promote them.
Spot on, Jon – it’s not “that hard” to get to that point.
I just read a great post – uh…from 2009?…from the RSS feed of the SEOBook toolbar, anyway, the guy said that the #1 thing in SEO or IM is this:
Have something worth buying.
If your product is bested by its competitors, and you are an affiliate with the lesser product, don’t complain: it’s your product!
Change Aff. programs…
With AdSense it’s simply: do good research, put up great content – with images! – and backlink the daylights out of it.
Make sure your on-page SEO is in tact…then rank all your pages. Not “hard” unless you do shoddy research to begin with…
And I second Ben – this blog is inspiring.

To all those who have highly ranked sites, but are receiving little traffic, I would advise you re-check your keywords in the google keyword tool. You might get a little bit of a shock when you see the new figures…………
Thanks. I just changed my shorts.
JamestheJust on Elance recently posted..Make Money Online And Don’t Spend A Dime Part 2
lol… look on the bright side – it looks like it is highly accurate now, which will make moving forward much easier. It sucked getting number 1 for a juicy 5k keyword, and only getting 20 uniques per day… Also I had some sites in the pipeline which I shall be dropping now I have seen their true search volume…
Wow,
Lots of my sites have higher search volume now! However that doesn’t mean much when you’re nowhere to be found lol
Zaheer
Nettech recently posted..25 Months On
Interesting – is that exact? Your the first person I have heard report higher search volume for any keywords. Some funny examples of mine: 8800 down to 91. I also have one thats gone from 125,000 down to 3,600 and a fair few xfactor type product based keywords gone from 3k+ down to <1000
everyone of the 48 keywords I have websites on has had a significant drop in search volume. It doesnt bother me too much as most of them are already ranked number 1 and earning, so my income hasnt dropped, its just been eye opening. I am making $10 per day from an xfactor site where the keyword gets 900 exacts per month……
Sorry Dan,
My bad, I was using MNF but just logged into the GAKT to double check and yup, you’re absolutely right! When I initially started this site, the search volume was 4,400 exact, (this tim elast year), I checked it earlier using MNF and its giving me a figure of 14,800 and now its giving me a figure of 2,400.
Hmmmmm, just what are Google upto?
Nettech recently posted..25 Months On
There doesnt seem to be much discussion about it anywhere – yet.
needless to say, I have promptly stopped backlinking the site where I was targetting the 125k keyword since it has dropped to 3k -wont be wasting anymore time on that one
Damn,
I’ve actually gone and purchased a domain that I was about to do some work on, sad thing is, its the first time Ive started a new site in months! MNF shows 2.4K searches and now all of a sudden its only 390 in the GAKT tool.
I am NOT a happy bunny, I guess I owe you a thank you for saving me time and money!
I think you should start a thread on the warrior forum! Get everyone talking…..
Does this mean Bye Bye Micro Niche Finder?….for now anyway?

Well [CENSORED by Sara] !!
Just another example of the moving target…wonder if using WordTracker or some other data center would prove more accurate?
That’s why I love using the keyword tools that don’t rely strictly on G…
Been using a different one lately, thanks to a tip from Leo Dimilo, called Rank Tracker (mentioned at my recent post, near the end).
It mines a number of data centers, you choose the one that returns your data (it checks rank, but also suggests a ton of other KWs…).
Anyhow, will need to crack it open and see….
JamestheJust on Elance recently posted..Make Money Online And Don’t Spend A Dime Part 2
Yeah – I think a lot of domain hoarders who picked up EMD’s for longtail keywords in the hope that IM’ers would buy them for a premium will be feeling a bit sick tonight… when they find out most of their domains are for keywords with a couple of hundred monthly searches!
Comparing keyword stats from google analytics shows me that this new data is pretty accurate e.g sites where I am number 1 mean I should get about 50% of the traffic for that keyword. Accroding to google analytics, this pretty muc holds true now when looking at specific keywords.
Wow this is pretty sickening. Most of mine are about 2k below the original numbers.
Looks like yet another result of Mayday/Caffeine!
Maybe now Google is able to break down long-tails even further and give them individual search volume numbers???? We knew from what was said about their previous algo that they were unable to do this accurately!
Another spanner in the works that we need to overcome!
It may simply mean that if this is the case that when we carry out kw research that we simply set our sights on lower numbers! Maybe lower is better and more ‘laser targeted’???
:-S

Zaheer – I think you’re totally correct. I just checked my ranking in Google and have not one, two or three #1 spots on my main money site – I have SIX.
Um…death of long tail sounds like it might be it. The reason being all the multiple #1 spots are long tail variants…I also wanted to add that my site has been producing despite the dismal #s on those product terms.
They never were that high, but the concerning thing is that my other KW monthly estimates were chopped by a factor of 10 – and yet my AdSense has also — not to brag — tripled.
JamestheJust on Elance recently posted..Make Money Online And Don’t Spend A Dime Part 2
Considering you have 6 listings on page 1, I’d be worried if your AdSense earnings DIDN’T triple…lol
Well done! Thats put a smile on my face!
Nettech recently posted..AdSense drop due to suspended hosting account
I think its just more accurate now i.e you know that if you target a keyword that has 3k searches, a number 1 ranking will give you ~50% of that traffic = 1500 per month or 50 uniques per day (not including any additional long-longtail traffic)
Of course it could all just be a screw up that gets rectified soon – who knows!
Thats true, its just a matter of giving it some time until the dust settles I think! Only then will we have a better understanding as to what to do.

Hmmmm, well ermmm so does a ‘friend’ of mine…*hint hint*.
Just be careful, from experience, if you want these to show up as unique, crop them to a different size and change the filename as well. I did read somewhere that Google were developing image recognition technology so they could read the contents of a picture….very futuristic but also very doable. Just think about Youtube videos, when you upload a dupe, they know not only because of the filesize and timestamp but I’m assuming from the actual content itself. I have no proof whatsoever but they seem to have all sorts of developers working on cutting edge stuff!
Oh and don’t take the images that rank in the first few pages or you’ll have the legal owners on your a$$.

Hello Noteworthytips,
I have been following your blog for quite a while now after finding it on the Xfactor forum which is now closed. I believe I have posted here once or twice before. First off, let me tell you that you serve as a motivation to me. Within 6 months I have only managed to get a $100 check from Google. I had about given up, but somehow that check gave me some hope and I managed to see some light in the near future.
I was curious if this is your full time job and if it is about how many hours a day do you put in it? How many articles do you write in a given day? I was also curious if you use Clickbump engine. Which template works best for you? I know its a lot of questions but your success really inspires me. One last question, do you friends and family freak out that you make money online? none of my friends or family know that I like this internet marketing stuff and I never told anybody about my check from Google. I guess I’m just afraid of being discouraged by them. Well, sorry for this long comment, hope you can answer some of my questions. My goal is to start off small, with a consistent 5 dollars a day. thanks.
LUIS
Congrats on your first $100! That in itself reminds you that t is possible to earn with adsense.
Now, to answer your questions.
Yes, this is my full time job. Right now the only people that doubt me is my ex husband, whom was so kindly to throw it in my face just the other day. But my immediate family is supportive and so are my ex’s parents. I cannot go to any sort of family function without family in awe of this and want me to explain how it works. In fact, I now have an uncle that wants me to teach him and a great aunt that is also interested in how it all works.
I work about 6 hours a day, depending on what’s on my agenda. I usually write 1- 2 content pages a day, followed by 2-3 articles to be submitted to ezines. Somedays I will use Bookmarking Demon to bookmark these new content pages and a few days a week I will use sick profile maker to get in some additional back links.
I use various Clickbump themes. I can’t even tell you which is my best performer because they all seem to do about the same in regards to CTR. But my favorite theme on my best performers right now are a mixture of the ugly green and black xfactor theme (only those sites are HTML static and not on wordpress) and the remaining best performing sites are using Thesis Theme. I am now using Thesis Theme on the sites I am focusing on turning into authority sites (which is my current project).
Do not let family, co-workers or friends steal your faith and hope. It is hard for family to believe that anyone can make money online but they do not know what you know. You have read the success stories of others, you have seen the threads on the warrior forum and you have read blogs which have visitors even commenting that they are earning money online. It will take some time but it is worth it. Eventually the day will come when very little maintenance will be needed for your sites and yet they will continue to rank and earn on their own. You can earn with adsense if you conduct good research and focus your attention to your sites by adding fresh content and getting new backlinks.
Luis,
Keep doing what you’re doing my friend. Online marketing is like any other business, it takes hard work, dedication, organisation, planning and execution.
Whats even more important is your mindset. If you keep headstrong you will start to see results provided you execute what you read.
Just work smarter and follow best practices and that should help you see a gradual increase in income over time….oh and keep you safe from any major algorithmic updates!
Most of my family know that I ‘do stuff’ online but because it is such a new concept I don’t have any support from anyone, parents, wife etc. Only 1 sister out of 4 ‘gets it’ as she was my protege who has now gone off to do other things for her husbands online business.
Let others think what they like, keep your head down and carry on. When you start to make a few hundred $$$ per month and then hopefully a few thousand, you can tell everyone ‘I told you so’, until then, just keep working. Hard work ALWAYS pays off my friend.

Have you done the “competitive ad filter” on your sites yet?
I’m wondering with a big network if that gets pushed aside. I just did…oh. Wow.

Nope, I haven’t played around with competitive ad filter. I have read before that some of the larger authority sites such as Nextel should be filtered since they bid very low amounts and its not worth having their ads displayed on your sites.
John Chow has a great post about using the competitive ad filter here. I guess I should do it as well.
I dont want to digress from the topic but has anyone used makebacklinks.com?

@ Luis. You can make as much as you put in time. It doesn’t have to be full time but it is a lot easier to get things done. You can always outsource articles if you don’t want to write them yourselves. I have never written a single article and outsourced everything. But u have to weigh in if those articles will pay themselves off.
You don’t need to tell them anything except you are trying to make money online because it’s not exactly the traditional way to make money. Most of the clickbump templates work fine you can always test. $5 is pretty easy. Build a few sites. Follow the xfactor method you should get there within 1-2 months.
@Noteworth You do save a lot of money though if you write articles yourself. As for the competitive ad filter there is a list on blackhatworld just search for it. They have a big list of like 200 things taht should be filtered so you don’t get penny clicks.
@everyone else I’ll check back here once in a while. Hopefully i can start making $100 from my $65 a day by Jan 2011. Time will tell.
@ Nettech
You may try them. They use xrumer. Things people need to know about sandbox.
1. Link velocity. If you spread them out over time (which is how profile links get picked up anyways not all in a day) you won’t get sandbox.
2. Sandbox. From what some people have told me an authority site keeps you out of sandbox. What does this mean? Either your site has been around for a while OR you have a lot of content. As long as u have enough content i believe you wont get sandboxed.
I like the analogy of expanding your net to catch more fish. It’s true though, you want to blanket as much space as you can with your content so you can reel in the dough.

Jon’s Adsense Journey 2010
not sure how u do that last blog thing. But my thoughts around that new google thing it might screw sites or make them better we’ll see. Because a lot of xfactor are based on long tailed aren’t they?
It’s probably been mentioned many times, but in case it’s not, i can tell you this is Google Image Search Results traffic.
I have this on many sites in my portfolio. It doesn’t convert very well, but it does convert somewhat if the sites look interesting via the shaded background google presents in this search result.
Righto, i missed your edit at the end stating you found it it was image search!

I have been reading your blog for quite a while and must say I have been quite impressed with the information you share on your blog, especially pertaining to Adsense. I was wondering if u also freelance (a.k.a. ghostwriting)? Let me know (by emailing me). Thanks. Keep up the good work!

Hi Arindam,
No, I do not do any freelance writing. To this day, I still do not love writing but I know that it is sometimes necessary to do so when you become an internet marketer (unless of course, you have the extra money to pay outsourcers to write for you.) I have outsourced my writing in the past, but since April of this year, I have been doing all of my own writing.
